Middle East Conflict Sparks Rise in EV Demand
Rising tensions in the Middle East are already influencing UK car buyers, with Autotrader reporting a sharp increase in interest for electric vehicles since late February. New EV enquiries have jumped by 28%, while used EV leads for models aged 0–5 years have risen by 15%, reflecting a clear shift in consumer behaviour.
Used EVs now account for a record 19.5% of all leads in this segment, despite making up only a small share of the overall UK car parc. The surge suggests growing concern around fuel price volatility and energy security, prompting more drivers to consider electric alternatives.
Autotrader notes that while fuel prices are not yet at previous highs, geopolitical uncertainty is bringing long-term costs and reliability into sharper focus. However, although interest is rising, converting that demand into sustained EV adoption will depend on improving consumer confidence and addressing practical concerns around ownership.
The All-New BMW i3: A Full-Size EV Saloon with Groundbreaking Range
BMW has unveiled the all-new i3, a full-size electric saloon and the latest model on its next-generation ‘Neue Klasse’ platform. Far from the old i3, this model offers up to 900 km of WLTP range, thanks to sixth-generation eDrive technology, an 800-volt architecture, and cylindrical battery cells. Rapid charging is equally impressive, adding around 400 km of range in just 10 minutes at compatible DC chargers.
The launch i3 50 xDrive features twin motors producing 469 hp and 645 Nm of torque, four high-performance computers managing driving, parking, infotainment, and comfort, plus a reworked suspension with optional adaptive M settings and BMW’s new ‘Soft-Stop’ braking.
Inside, the cabin boasts the Panoramic iDrive display stretching across the windscreen, a 17.9-inch central touchscreen, optional 3D head-up display, and Amazon Alexa+. Eco-friendly materials like recycled polyester seats are standard, with premium Veganza and full Merino leather options available.
The i3 also supports bidirectional Vehicle-to-Load charging, allowing the battery to power tools or home devices, and BMW Digital Key Plus lets phones or smartwatches act as car keys with shareable permissions.
Production begins at BMW’s Munich plant in August 2026, with UK deliveries expected in the autumn. With sustainable materials, cutting-edge tech, and high performance, the new i3 marks BMW’s full commitment to electric driving and is a standout contender for both personal and fleet EV buyers.
One in Four UK Drivers Go Electric as EV Momentum Continues in 2026
Electric vehicles maintained strong momentum in February 2026, with battery electric cars making up around 25% of new UK registrations. When plug-in hybrids are included, more than a third of new cars were electrified, highlighting the continued shift away from petrol and diesel, which both saw declining sales.
While overall EV volumes remained steady year-on-year, the market continues to transition, supported by growing hybrid adoption and evolving ZEV mandate targets. Although flexibilities in the scheme have effectively lowered the required share of fully electric sales, current EV uptake is still tracking above target.
Brand competition remains intense, with Tesla, Volkswagen, BMW, Audi and Ford among the leading players, while manufacturers like Škoda, Renault and Ford recorded notable growth. In the commercial sector, electric vans reached a record market share of nearly 14%, showing strong uptake as fleet operators respond to improving cost efficiencies.
Despite this progress, industry leaders stress that continued investment in charging infrastructure and clear, consistent policy will be key to sustaining growth. With EVs now firmly established in the mainstream, the UK’s transition to electric mobility is well underway, though the pace will depend on maintaining consumer confidence and regulatory clarity.
