UK drivers are set to benefit from a major new government initiative designed to accelerate the switch to electric vehicles (EVs), reduce emissions, and ease the financial burden of upgrading. A £650 million Electric Car Grant has been launched, potentially saving households up to £3,750 when they purchase a new electric car.
Under this scheme, car manufacturers will apply directly through the Electric Car Grant process, allowing for faster access to the savings and streamlined delivery of discounted EVs to both consumers and businesses. Drivers will start to benefit from discounts as soon as manufacturers successfully apply for their zero-emission cars to be part of the grant scheme from 16 July 2025, with funding available until the 2028/29 financial year.
This move follows a record-breaking year for the electric car market, with over 380,000 zero-emission vehicles registered in the UK in the past 12 months. It also forms a key part of the Government’s wider Plan for Change, which aims to stimulate economic growth, encourage cleaner transportation, and put more money back in the pockets of working families.
With this significant funding injection, the government is reaffirming its commitment to a greener future while helping drivers overcome the upfront cost barrier to EV adoption. Industry experts anticipate this will not only boost demand but also provide a much-needed stimulus for the automotive sector.
Now is the time for buyers considering the switch to electric. Keep an eye out for eligible vehicles and grant-backed deals rolling out soon!
