Electric vans offer a range of benefits that make them an increasingly attractive option for businesses and drivers alike. They allow access to low or zero-emission zones without any penalties, which is valuable in in the major UK cities with strict environmental regulations.
In addition to being quieter and smoother, electric vans are also more cost-effective to run. Charging an electric van is substantially cheaper than refueling with petrol or diesel, and while the upfront cost may be slightly higher, the reduced need for maintenance results in significantly lower running costs over time.
The UK government has announced a £120 million initiative aimed at promoting the adoption of electric vehicles, including vans, taxis, and motorbikes. This funding is part of the country’s ongoing efforts to reduce carbon emissions, improve air quality, and support the transition to cleaner transportation.
So far this year, electric vans have made up 8.3% of the total van market. Although diesel vans still dominate sales, the growing share of electric vans suggests a shifting trend. These year-on-year increases will play a vital role in helping the UK government meet its goal of ending the sale of new internal combustion engine (ICE) vans by 2035.
The recent extension of the Plug-in Van Grant, which will now expire at the end of March 2026, should also help grow these sales figures further, which should mean EV vans will take more prominence in the used LCV market in the near future
A recent survey from Vauxhall found that 39% of UK businesses were confident in switching to an all-electric fleet as soon as next year, highlighting the further demand down the line for electric vans.
